SUMMARY:The Room Next Door (15)
DESCRIPTION:Ingrid and Martha became close friends while working together at the same magazine. After years of being out of touch\, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. \n\n\n\nThis is Almodovar’s first English language film. It is a powerful exploration of euthanasia\, where Ingrid (Tilda Swinton) asks her old childhood friend\, Martha (Julianne Moore)\, to stay with her until Ingrid decides she is ready to die. When she has made that decision\, she will close her bedroom door which is next to her friend’s. The repercussions following Martha’s death resonate with the current debate in this country on assisted dying. \n\n\n\nThis film won the Golden Lion award at the Venice International Film Festival in 2024. \n\n\n\nEnglish. 107m. Directed by Pedro Almodovar.

SUMMARY:The Marching Band (TBC)
DESCRIPTION:Screenshot\n\n\n\nAcclaimed conductor Thibaut has leukaemia and needs a bone marrow donor. Learning he was adopted\, he finds an older brother\, a musician and factory worker. Their reunion sparks a fraternal\, musical journey amidst the town’s factory closure. It has echoes of Brassed Off with its exploration of the impact of unemployment on a whole community. This is a delightful\, at times hilarious\, other times poignant\, exploration of who we are and where we come from. \n\n\n\nFrench with English subtitles. 103m. Directed by Emmanuel Courcol

SUMMARY:Santosh (15)
DESCRIPTION:Hard hitting doesn’t do this film justice. “It hits like a train” is nearer the mark. This searching and compelling crime drama gives so much more to its audience than the extraordinary unravelling of its own mystery. The film is also anunforgiving expose of blatant sexism\, institutional violence and wanton corruption embedded within India’s contemporary rural justice system. \n\n\n\nNewly widowed Santosh inherits her husband’s job as a police constable and quickly finds herself enmeshed in the murder investigation of a young “Dalit” girl. In her quest for the“truth” underlying the case\, Santosh is forced into facing down centuries old external cultural barriers as well as facing up to her own inner trial and this leaves her (and us as her audience) questioning the very possibility of justice in the circumstances within which this story unfolds. Director Sandhiya Suri’s brave film cries out to be watched. \n\n\n\nAlready a BAFTA-nominated writer-director\, Suri makes her feature debut with Santosh. Premiering in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2024\, the film earned critical acclaim and was developed with support from the Sundance Screenwriters and Directors Labs. \n\n\n\nHindi with English subtitles. 2h. Directed by Sandhya Suri

SUMMARY:My Favourite Cake (15)
DESCRIPTION:Even to come and sit with friends\, and possibly with a glass of wine in the comfort of Ditchling Village Hall and view My Favourite Cake\, is a kind of political act\, given the nature and history of this remarkable film. Now imagine you live in Iran\, the Authorities have refused the film a public viewing licence: the film’s directors are under suspended sentence for spreading lies and producing vulgar content. They’ve had all their film making equipment confiscated. Viewing the film in private\, if you managed to get hold of a copy\, risks falling foul of the Morality Police. \n\n\n\nNow you begin to get a sense of the context within which My Favourite Cake was made\, why it was made and the supreme artistry of its attack on the Regime’s on going repression of women’s rights. You take\, as the film’s central character an elderly woman. In itself this is an affront – you just don’t do that in Iranian cinema. Now you charge your central character with powerful feelings\, not just of the isolation that has come to her with the passing years\, but with a longing for life that refuses to lie down\, and yes lust\, and her determination to do something about it. \n\n\n\nThere is a wonderfully comedic irony about her choice of partner\, a hapless taxi driver of her own age and every step in their whirlwind “romance” adds insult and injury to the official cultural version of how the elderly should behave. \n\n\n\nThis is powerful cinema\, delivered with a gentleness and sense of ridicule that makes for an unexpected evening’s viewing. \n\n\n\nPersian with English subtitles. 97m Directed by Maryam Moghaddam & Behtash Sanaeeha \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA personal view by guest critic Beth Travers\n\n\n\nAh yes\, My Favourite Cake – though I would have appreciated a slice or twoto comfort me after this film. It is a gut-wrenching portrayal of loneliness andisolation of two\, single 70-year-olds living in the hustle of modern-day Tehran. This award-winning Iranian film follows seventy-year-old Mahin and herattempt to revitalise her life after the loss of her husband. From a hilariousdepiction of female friendships\, to heroism in the face of the oppressiveIranian morality police\, co-directors Maryam Moghadam and BehtashSanaeeha beautifully capture a revival of love and romance. \n\n\n\nThe question arises from the beginning of the film – is it possible to find loveonce again at such an age? Mahin proves quite easily that it is\, even underthe constraints of the Islamic Republic regime. She determinedly sets herheart on rediscovering life with a partner\, unabashedly inviting cab driver andmilitary veteran\, Faramarz (played by Esmail Mehrabi  ) into her home forsome of her “favourite cake”. Admittedly I felt dazzled by her boldness\, LiliFarhadpour magically captured that universal excitement and enjoyment offemale pursuit typically associated with young\, carefree (and predominantlywestern) women. She proved the desire to be seen and for physical touchnever dies as we grow older. \n\n\n\nEsmail won my heart with his loveable\, charming smile and dance moves thathad viewers (such as myself) crying on their sofas still with no cake insight… \n\n\n\nBeth

SUMMARY:Battleship Potemkin (PG)
DESCRIPTION:Screenshot\n\n\n\nAstounding… breathtaking… extraordinary… To celebrate its 80th birthday in 2005\, Sergei Eisenstein’s revolutionary cinematic masterpiece was given a Pet Shop Boys synth pop musical work over and presented publicly (and to acclaim) at the Barbican Theatre and in Trafalgar Square in London. In the 2025 remastered version we are screening at Ditchling Village Hall for our October showing\, The Pet Shop boys score is performed by the Dresden Sinfoniker and orchestrated by Torsten Rasch. \n\n\n\nEisenstein always said his originally silent film should be accompanied by contemporary music. To keep it relevant for new audiences he suggested the musical accompaniment should be revised and updated every decade or so. \n\n\n\nThe Edmund Meisel score was the first update and later\, the Kryukov adaptation of Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony took up the challenge. Now with the Pet Shop Boys score\, twenty years on\, the music is uncompromisingly “club”\, not at all symphonic\, but it is contemporary. It certainly is not Russian. But somehow\, perhaps because it is “club” with its relentlessly driving beat\, itmanages to work across the mass crowd scenes\, the giant machine cut-aways and the individual expressions of suffering and horror that were so brilliantly captured by Eisenstein and that are emblematic of his masterpiece. \n\n\n\nWelcome to our showing of one of the most acclaimed films in cinematichistory. \n\n\n\nWe present our film with an introduction and question time with the filmhistorian and archivist Dr Frank Grey. \n\n\n\nDirector Sergei M. Eisenstein. 72 minutes. Silent. Originally screened in 1925. This version with new accompanying soundtrack by the Pet Shop Boys. 2025

SUMMARY:The Tundra Within Me (12A)
DESCRIPTION:Oskai’s film shows narrative and characters richly steeped in Sami cultural and tradition. Artist Lena returns to her remote Sami homeland in order to work on a project about women herders after she herself rejected this role and headed for the city. \n\n\n\nThe stark and beautiful landscape shows the life of the herders including the women and Lena is torn between renewing this life for herself and her son whilst falling in love. \n\n\n\nThe director Oskai is also a herder and this enables her to understand the love and pain that goes into this way of life. A beautiful and enriching film.

SUMMARY:The Worst Person in the World (15)
DESCRIPTION:Director Joachim Trier. Norwegian with English subtitles. 2h. \n\n\n\nIt’s difficult being twenty-something. It’s difficult being so light and oh so pretty – you can (and can’t) get away with anything. It’s difficult when you are moving through life at a different pace from everyone else. It’s difficult finding yourself when you keep losing yourself. It’s difficult being the worst person in the world when you’re not. \n\n\n\nDirector Joachim Trier’s romantic tragicomedy somehow strikes every note pitch perfectly. Actor Renate Reinsve won multiple awards for her central role as Julie\, searching for herself as she leaves her twenties. Enjoy!

SUMMARY:It was Just an Accident (12A)
DESCRIPTION:Director Jafar Panahi. Iranian (Farsi) with English subtitles. 1h 42m. \n\n\n\nA dog is run over; a car breaks down. A chance encounter. We are in Iran and we’re being asked\, does violent revenge have any place in a civilised society\, even if we don’t like the prevailing brand of civilisation? The state torturer fallen into the hands of the formerly tortured. Just by accident. What follows in Palme D’Or winning Jafar Panahi’s 2025 revenge thriller will have you on the edge of your seat. But don’t worry\, in this minor miracle of film-making\, even the most vile of human capabilities is served up with a lightness of touch and gentle humour\, that what wins out is humanity itself.

SUMMARY:Coward (15)
DESCRIPTION:Director Lukas Dhont. French with English subtitles. 2h 7m. \n\n\n\n1916/17\, Belgian Western Front: death stalks the trenches. Well\, we could all do with a bit of a laugh\, a bit of a knees up\, a bit of bawdry. And look\, here comes the Band of Rejects ready and able to give us just that. An odd place to find a lover\, but in Lukas Dhont’s Coward\, that’s exactly where the shoots of love are to be found\, growing out of the mud and the blood. SUMMARY:My Father’s Shadow (12A)
DESCRIPTION:Screenshot\n\n\n\nDirector Akinola Davies Jnr. Nigerian with English subtitles. 1h 33m. \n\n\n\nDoes love equal absence? A crazy question you might think\, but it’s the one that drives the narrative of director Akinola Davies Jnr’s debut feature. Taking a child’s eye view\, an errant father\, unaccountably and briefly returns\, in all his imagined magnificence and mystery. Why has he come home? It turns out\, to make off with his two young boys and give them a glimpse of his real life in a city in meltdown. It’s the 1983 uprising. What the boys can make of all this gives the film its truly remarkable edge.

SUMMARY:The Invite (15)
DESCRIPTION:Director Olivia Wilde. American English. 1h 47m. \n\n\n\nIf you’re into titillation\, and relish squirming in your seat at the antics of feckless hosts Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Olivia Wilde) as they try to keep pace with their super cool upstairs neighbours and dinner guests Pina (Penelope Cruz) and Hawk (Edward Norton)\, then this is an absolute must-see movie. If you’re not\, the film is still more than worthy of your attention for its humour\, its sure-fire crisscrossing dialogue and the lovely dramatic arc of its unfolding story. A sex comedy of sorts served up for dinner by Director Olivia Wilde with inedible food and no wine.

SUMMARY:Broken English (15)
DESCRIPTION:Directors Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard. English. 1h 38m. \n\n\n\nAt the start you might be baffled\, but stay with it. The story that unfolds is not just moving\, you might feel outraged\, you might find yourself shouting inwardly: how could they have done that? Marianne Faithful reflects on her life as a rock icon. She died before the film was finalised and released. Nick Cave and Tilda Swinton give this telling of that life\, condemned from the start by its protagonist’s beauty and notoriety\, a genuinely cutting edge. We follow the evolution of a voice that carries love\, hurt and defiance entangled together over six decades right up to the star’s final performance.

SUMMARY:Kneecap (18)
DESCRIPTION:Director Rich Peppiatt. Irish with English subtitles and English. 1h 45m. \n\n\n\nManic\, irreverent\, ketamine-fueled and ‘mostly true’\, Rich Peppiatt’s award-winning drama documentary creates an origin myth for the real life band Kneecap. What’s it all about? Well\, you’ll have to follow the subtitles unless you speak the language. And this is the serious point behind this wild sex\, drugs and hip hop caper. The preservation and promotion of the Irish language itself. Avowedly Republican in sentiment\, this is not a film that will be to everyone’s taste\, but if you want to give your sense of humour a run for its money\, it’s a must see.

SUMMARY:The Stranger (L’Etranger) (15)
DESCRIPTION:Director Francois Ozon. French with English subtitles. 2h. \n\n\n\nOne way to view Francois Ozon’s The Stranger is simply to be seduced by its languid sensuality\, rendered by Manu Dacosse’s gorgeous monochrome lighting and lead actors Benjamin Voisin (Mersault) and Rebecca Marder’s (Marie) sensual entanglements. The other is to try and work out what is going on with Mersault\, Camus’ archetypal anti-hero. You’ll know the story: murder under the blazing Algerian sun and Mersault’s dogged refusal to swerve the inevitable execution that’s waiting for him. Ozon’s is a gently queered\, post-colonial reworking of Camus’ 1942 masterpiece. For all that\, a film that chimes with its origins.

SUMMARY:Minotaur (18)
DESCRIPTION:Director Andrey Zvyagintsev. Russian with English subtitles. 2h 15m. \n\n\n\nThere is no way out of this labyrinth: the lair is so complex\, so vast and deviously devised that even the big boss man around here can’t escape this unnamed town in provincial Russia. No one can escape it. Now the beast is demanding a fresh fill of innocents for the Ukrainian front line: how can he fulfil the order? This is veteran Russian film maker Andrey Zvyagintsev’s multi award-winning essay in bad faith\, or portrait of contemporary Russia at war\, nowhere near where you happen to live.
