It was Just an Accident (12A)

Director Jafar Panahi. Iranian (Farsi) with English subtitles. 1h 42m.
A dog is run over; a car breaks down. A chance encounter. We are in Iran and we’re being asked, does violent revenge have any place in a civilised society, even if we don’t like the prevailing brand of civilisation? The state torturer fallen into the hands of the formerly tortured. Just by accident. What follows in Palme D’Or winning Jafar Panahi’s 2025 revenge thriller will have you on the edge of your seat. But don’t worry, in this minor miracle of film-making, even the most vile of human capabilities is served up with a lightness of touch and gentle humour, that what wins out is humanity itself.
